Reap what you Sow
This conservation project has been funded with a grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust made through the Landfill Communities Fund.

The project got off to a good start on 29 October when we planted over 50 fruit trees at the entrance to the site. We will continue with the project during National Tree Planting Week on 27 November when the Mayor will officially open the site. The event will be held between 10am and 4pm and we would welcome any volunteers who are interested in taking part. We will meet at the car park at Watson Street, Burton on Trent. Please feel free to bring your own spade. Tools can be provided, however we are expecting a high volume of volunteers. Don’t forget your packed lunch!

The project aims to bring a wide range of community groups together and takes place on the Washlands area in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire. Volunteers from within the community will work with Burton Conservation Volunteers to plant 100 Black Poplar trees to represent where the old Peels Cut was once situated.

Peels Cut was a water way that used to take water from the river Trent to the working Cotton Mills. The textile industry was the main industry in Burton before the brewing industry was established.
At the entrance to the site where the fruit trees have been planted the community can learn about reducing their carbon foot print. We plan to have six information boards, highlighting which trees have been planted, what local habitats can be found on site and hopefully some original photos to illustrate how the area was geographically different.
East Staffordshire Borough Council have supported the project from the beginning, not only by giving permission for the project to take place on the land but also for a contribution in kind - ordering equipment for the project without VAT being incurred, meaning more of the grant funding could be spent on the trees.
If you are interested in volunteering on the 27 November please contact
Neil or Alison on 01283 543414.
